Blackboard Café offers pub-like atmosphere
By: Glenn Shafer, Staff Writer, 01/06/2006
If you are looking for a local pub with a warm and friendly atmosphere, check out the Blackboard Café. Owned by Enfield residents Greg and Kristen Buceivicius, the Blackboard Café is located at 541 Spring Street, just off Route 75.
Open now for 6 months. Buceivicius completely renovated the space, handling the carpentry himself and creating a clean, welcoming, and friendly look. Buceivicius believes it is important to keep his customers entertained as they walk through the doors of the Blackboard Café. With daily trivia and factoids, different musical themes and drink discounts, and live music, customers feel safe at the Blackboard Café. There is country music played on Thursdays, rock bands perform on Fridays, and stand up comedy on the first Saturday of each month. On Wednesdays, discounts are offered to customers who work in the hospitality field. "If they smell like a French fry, they get $1 off all drinks," said Buceivicius. According to Buceivicius, the local hotels adjacent to the airport have been recommending the Blackboard Café as a local pub to business travelers. Buceivicius is working very hard to shed the image from bars previously located in the same location. A dress code, new non-smoking laws, and a shared family value have made the Blackboard Café a must visit in Windsor Locks. The secret is out about the Blackboard Café. "It's a pub feel," said Buceivicius. "The clientele are really nice people. I can't say enough about the people. They are like a second family to me. That is the feeling. It is all about how everyone acts towards each other. I want my parents and children and three kids to be able to come in and feel comfortable. People know I am a family man. There is a personal level with me. The regulars come in and they know my wife and kids." Straddling two careers, Buceivicius works for Sysco during the day selling food products to restaurants and schools. Working in the food business since he was 14 years old, Buceivicius previously was a managing partner for Ruby Tuesday's. "I had been looking for a location for a while and I stumbled across this location. I saw the trees through the forest," he said. Video games, ping-pong, poker, jukebox, and fooze-ball line the perimeter of the Blackboard Cafe. A limited menu of food is also available including The Fat Frank, Hawg Wings, and Hot Garlic Shrimp Skewers. "All of our food is over the top," said Buceivicius. "We will be expanding the menu."
